Bombay Velvet is based on 60s era, was visually perfect since the opening credits roll in against Amit Trivedi’s jazz score in the background. The sets, the costumes, and the atmosphere immediately transport you into late 60s. Very few movies have the ability to do so but it is remarkable only when it retains the magic till the end, and Bombay Velvet failed in that segment. Anurag Kashyap was trying to tell the audience the story behind how Bombay became India’s financial capital (at least that’s what I could make out). But the point lost somewhere in between and was not strong enough. The plot revolved around street fights, political rivalries, murders (as if the solution to every problem is to kill the person), some interesting jazz scores and Ranbir-Anushka’s romance.
Ranbir Kapoor who plays the role of Johnny Balraj, invests a great deal in his character with his rugged look, arrogant and proud attitude and dialogue delivery. He was the backbone of Bombay Velvet and maybe the only saving grace for this movie. Johnny Balraj is a boxer turned mobster who wants to become a ‘big shot’ in his life.
