ABCD 2 - Movie Review

I had no bounds to my excitement and thrill when I went to watch ABCD 2 and why not, I was going to watch one of the much anticipated movies of this year. I was in awe of the first part and being a big fan of Prabhudheva, I dare miss this one. I am not a keen dancer, in fact I go to an extent of escaping any dance floor. But the first part made me dance (whatever I know) in my seat, which is new to me.
So I was super excited to watch its sequel and let’s see if it was as promising.

ABCD 2 is inspired by real life of a Mumbai group who made it World Hip Hop Challenge finals in Las Vegas. It is the story of Suresh (Varun Dhawan) and Vernon’s (Sushant Pujari) journey from Nalasopara in suburban Mumbai to Vegas. And then there’s Vinnie (Shraddha Kapoor) to add that unnecessary element of romance to the film (Why can’t Bollywood get rid of this element at least in a story that doesn’t need it. For God’s sake, it’s a dance movie). Prabhudheva reprises the role of Vishnu Sir from the first film, and there are other new faces added to the cast this time around which is a visual delight during their dances. Raghav Juyal was extra ordinary.

Varun Dhawan dances like a dream in some sequences and shows off his bare abs which is a mighty fine sight. Shraddha Kapoor has worked hard to get her moves perfect. With regards to the acting skills, she has done a better job this time as compared to Aashiqui 2. Prabhudheva as always is beyond compare. Even at 42, his dance is whistle-blowing (though there are some repetitive steps).

The story slows done in the second part, when the dance group reaches Las Vegas and some scenes look repetitive and too predictable. Again, I don’t understand the need of racial taunts to be included in almost all movies when Indians take part in some world-level competition. I can list down various sequences that could have been shortened or even eliminated.

An accident in the story lets blonde bombshell Lauren Gottlieb to return, and then Prabhudheva tries to use the group for his own good. There are some more such minor excitements which make you lift your head once in a while but only momentarily.

When you make a sequel, you are supposed to maintain some parameters. You cannot just make a completely new story with no reference to the previous part and call it a sequel. But, I guess Bollywood never really understood this. In this second part, Prabhudheva still believes that anybody can dance and there are some repeated characters out of which he recognizes some and doesn’t others. For example, there’s Ganesh Acharya in a cameo appearance as Gopi, who is the same old friend of Vishnu but then there’s also D who was Vishnu Sir’s student in previous part but in this one, they are strangers.

A dance movie needs to have that electricity which is missing. I would also go to the extent that the story is missing its soul at some points. But nothing that doesn’t deserve a one-time watch. It is one of those rare movies which might not entertain you to the fullest but you still don’t want to leave the theatre without watching it till the credits roll. In a nutshell, it’s a lovely watch and one will enjoy it.
